Plenty of shop owners know a cash book is holding them back but dread the switch. The good news: moving to a POS is a weekend job, not a shutdown — if you do it in the right order.
Start with your products, not your history
You don't need years of past sales in the system to begin. Load your current catalogue — name, selling price, cost, and quantity on hand — and you can start ringing up sales the same day. History can come later or stay in the old book.
Get prices and stock counts right first
The one thing worth doing carefully is your opening stock count and prices. Garbage in, garbage out: accurate starting numbers make every report afterwards trustworthy.
Train on the till, not the manual
Your cashiers only need three things on day one: find a product, take payment, print a receipt. Teach those at the counter with real sales. Everything else — reports, credit, returns — they'll pick up within a week.
Keep the cash book for one week
Run both side by side for a few days so you trust the system. Once the day-end totals match, retire the book. Most owners never look back.
